Rosy Cheeks and Smiling Faces

Below are just a few of the photos I took on Monday
at our family outing on Old Main Hill, tubing, sledding,
snowboarding, building snowmen and laughing a lot.
It was a great day on the hill and the soup etc. and
especially the great company just made everything
nearly perfect when we got to our place. We missed
the ones who couldn't make it and appreciate those who
came and made the day such wonderful time for everyone.

Sorry I didn't get a picture of everyone, but I'm sure
somebody did. Please share your photos. I know some of
them were much better than mine.
Again, thanks for making the day a great Christmas time
memory for all of us.

Just a part of the specialness of the Christmas season

Christmas evening we went out to Justin and Chalisa's in
Hyrum. It's always fun to go out there. It was snowing
quite hard when we left and we drove home in a blizzard.
Yes, everyone had a White Christmas, but we were glad
we made it home safely and were off the slippery and
snowy highways.

We also visited Alison and Ammon and their family
on Christmas Day. They always make us feel welcome
and special. We had a good time there and were glad
to see them all having fun, enjoying each other and this
special season of the year.

together at Aunt Alison's on Christmas Day.

Photograph.

guitar.

Can you believe Chalisa's Dad made one of those for all
of our little grand-daughters. How nice can a man be.

We spent Christmas Eve at Ryan and Samantha's. They
had a wonderful meal prepared for us and shared the
Christmas story. We opened gifts and talked about the
most important gift of all, our Savior, and how each gift
we give or get should be a reminder of the greatest gift
of all. When we arrived at Ryan and Sam's house we were
in for a big surprise. After a couple of minutes there,
here came little Sophie into the living room. We had no
idea they were any where near. We just supposed Stephen
and his crew were at home in Colorado. What a JOY it was
to see them and then to have them with us for most of the
remainder of the holiday season. There would certainly
have been less fun around our house without them.
Here are some of the clan opening Christmas gifts at Ryan
and Samantha's Christmas Eve. Thank you so much Ryan
and Sam. It was a wonderful Christmas Eve together.

On Christmas Eve Day Jason and Rene and their
wonderful family stopped by for a while. We went
to Federico's for Pizza and salads, and of course lots of
laughs. Those kids can make you laugh 'til you cry,
which they did. Thanks for the visit and the fun times.

Grandma Iris and little Kate putting a puzzle together at
Justin and Chalisa's. Their kids were so fun to be with.

I spent some fun time with Ethan putting together
(what else) a dinosaur puzzle. He says, he's going
to be a paleontologist. I think is one already.

We had the opportunity during the season to attend one
JT's wresting meets. He did a wonderful job and was
really taking it to the other kid, when all of a sudden he
made a wrong move and pinned himself. Is there anyone
of us who has not done the same thing in some way or
another. We all live and learn, and if we get up every time
we fall down and try again, we are never losers. JT is no
loser in my book, but one of the greatest winners ever,
especially because he helps others become winners too.

We stopped off to see Philip and Megan. They are doing
well and still love each other, their kids and us, not to
mention everyone else. Love is what makes the world go
around.

We also got to see Tanner man in his swim meet at
Clearfield. The kid can flat out swim. Watch out Michael
Phelps, here comes Tanner Man. Tanner is in the
middle lane in this picture.

It's Christmas time and winter in the Cache Valley. The
Temple and the Church play a big part in our lives. In
this photo, taken from Old Main Hill at USU you can see
both our ward meeting house and the Logan Temple. It's
nice to be so close.

We went out to Justin's and Chalisa's one
day. Ethan went out to help me shovel the
driveway and play in the snow. Everything
was beautiful. When we went back inside
Ethan said to me: "This has been the
happiest day of my life." I'm not quite sure
that was true, but it does show that the
greatest joys are often found with someone
who loves you doing the simplest things.

Winter Wonderland December 26, 2008

Stephen and I went for a little walk up to Old Main Hill this
morning. It was beautiful after the snowfall of the previous
evening. Here are just a few of the views. We hope all of
you had a very Merry Christmas and remember that we
love you all and always.

Winter Wonderland

Winter has finally arrived in the Cache Valley, at least for
now. I love the winter season. Everything is so fresh and
the air so brisk. I'll admit that after about six months of
it, I'm ready for the daffodils, but can any one deny the
beauty of this photo.

It's That Time Of Year

I took River and we went to the mountains this morning
to find a Christmas tree. There was little snow to battle,
so finding one was relatively easy. I have always enjoyed
searching for that perfect tree. Unfortunately I've never
found it, but once they get all dressed up for Christmas
they are all beautiful. It's one of my favorite traditions of
the Christmas season. River was sure glad to get out in
the woods, which made me doubly happy. We put the
tree up this afternoon/evening and will add a few finishing
touches tomorrow. We hope the Christmas season is filled
with peace an joy for all of you and yours.

Thanksgiving Celebration

The ladies of the house.

Now there are couple of good cooks, everything was yummy.

We spent the Thanksgiving Holiday at Alison's and
had a great time. The food was wonderful as was the
company. Thanks, Alison and Family for all you do for
us, not to mention the yummy food. It's always a joy
to come to your home, there is always such a good spirit
there. We love you and appreciate you for your good
example to us all. We hope that everyone had a wonderful
Thanksgiving, wherever you were, and that you all had
family and friends around. That's a big part of what its
about. Please be careful driving home for you who
traveled.

Thanksgiving - An Attitude of Gratitude

For most of us, a feast like this with loving family
around, is what our "Thanksgiving" holiday has
become, and for that we should be very, very grateful.
For most of us it has become the expected and more or
less taken for granted.
Last night Iris and I had the opportunity to go to Addison
school concert where he plays the violin in the school
orchestra. We were pleased to be there and Addison
and all the others did a wonderful job. We were happy
we could attend. After the concert at the Willow Valley
School, I heard some one calling my name. I'm new
again in the valley and so I was somewhat surprised.
A young man, came over to me, and said: "You probably
don't know who you are talking to. I could place the face
but my memory, for the moment, could not attach a name
to it. He reminded me that I had taught him more than
20 years ago. I had known him and his family well.
In the course of the conversation he told me where he
lived and what he was doing for a living. I asked him how
his family was doing, and he replied: "We are doing very
well." Then after a little more discussion and inquiry
he told me that he and his wife had had five children.
One had died of some sort of heart condition a few months
after birth, two others, one now in her early teens and
another approaching her teen years were confined to
wheelchairs and had not developed mentally or
or emotionally much past the three or four year old
stage. He told me of the months the had practically lived
at the Primary Children's Hospital trying to get help
for their condition., all to no avail. As we took leave
of one another he again told me. We're doing great and are
very thankful for our experiences and our family.
An Attitude of Gratitude, had made him a happy person,
in spite of his trials.
As I thought back on his life and that of his family I could
see where this Attitude of Gratitude had come from. When
he was but a child, probably in his teens, his father, then a
bishop of his ward, was killed in a tragic accident while
getting some poles from the canyon for use on their dairy
farm. At the time his mother was pregnant with their ninth
child. They were deeply in debt, as many small farmers are,
but they buried their husband and father as their Bear Lake
Valley neighbors rallied around them. They stayed strong
in their faith and active in the Church. All nine of those children
went through my classes at school over the years. They always
did their best and never failed to say thanks for any help they
received. All of the boys and some of the girls served mission
and went on to get higher education. They have all been
married in the temple and have wonderful families of their own.
They have learned, as we all should, what is important in the
eternal scheme of things. After their mother raised the family
on the farm, with all of them pulling together, their mother
remarried and moved out of the valley. Before she left she
wrote a letter and had it published in the News-Examiner, the
Bear Lake Valley newspaper, expressing her gratitude to all
who had stood by her and her family during her trials. I never
heard her or any of her kids complain. It kind of reminds me of
the words of Randy Pausch in his famous Last Lecture: "We
can't always control the cards we are dealt, but we can control
the way we play them." It's up to us. Every cloud has a silver
lining, and every sunny day its shadows. We can emphasize
the clouds or the shadows if we choose, but if we choose to see
the beauties and opportunities and help other do the same,
we will meet the measure of our creation. "Things are going
great." and we will have "Joy". Let us all seek to develop an
ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE.
I am grateful for all of you, for your abilities and for your
challenges. They can and should make us better people.
I Love all of you and hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving
Season.

Annika and Micah's visit

Annika and Micah came over on Saturday for a few
hours while their parents were busy elsewhere. We
enjoyed them so much. They are so full of life and such
good little friends. It's easy to see they love each other
and have been taught how to treat others. It is good
for us to be closer so we can see them grow.

Playing in the Logan City eaves.

We took a little walk up past the temple. They know
what it is and that it is a special place.

Annika and Micah by one of the trees in our front yard.
Annika just got a new winter coat.

We really enjoyed their visit and I think they had a good
time too. We hope you can come again soon, Annika and
Micah.

Autumn in Logan

I'm a Bear Laker at heart, but I've got to admit Logan has it's beauties, which we already knew. We love the views of the Mountains, especially when they begin to show some snow and the leaves in this town have always made a big impression on me, even in my college days. The fall foliage is always so beautiful and in our situation, we don't even have to bother much with cleaning it up (an advantage of senior housing developments like ours here). We are making new friends, though we miss our old ones in Bear Lake. We see many of them at the temple, which we always enjoy. I am the ward mission leader and we are having a convert baptism on Saturday at 3:00. We've had more member support in the three weeks I've had the position, than we got in 30 months as a full time missionary in my real missionary days. I love to be involved and help the missionaries. It seems like I've got the best of both worlds, literally since retiring and moving to Logan. We are very grateful for all the experiences of life, past and present, and especially the the honor we have of counting all of you in our family circle.
We love you all and always will.

Love,

Grandpa and Grandma
